Antiques, Memorabilia and Collectibles – Unique in Their Own Way

If you visit any antique collectibles auction, you will find there is a market for almost every kind of object ever crafted by man. People around the world travel in search of items
classified as "antique," and collectibles of all genres command considerable interest as well. These items are sought after both for the aesthetic love of the pieces but also as financial investments.

The key to successful antique collecting lies in research and self-education. Collectors need to know how to appraise the pieces in which they are interested (both in terms of value and authenticity) and to judge when a piece can be restored and when it is beyond repair. The pursuit of antiques and collectibles can last a life time and afford the collector many hours of pleasant preoccupation.

What's the difference between Antiques and Collectibles?

An antique is a physical object that corresponds to another era of human history. There are various definitions regarding how much time must pass for an item to be considered an antique, ranging from 25 to 75 years. In between this range is an age when items are considered "vintage." This roughly means that they are still functional and can be used for the purpose for which they were intended but are old enough to be out of style and considered quaint and nostalgic. Radios from the 1950s are a good example. The sets function as efficiently as newer models but their stylized plastic cases set them apart. Radios from the 1930s, however, would be considered antiques because they run on an older technology and are more difficult to restore and keep in working order.

A collectible is an item that was either manufactured with the purpose of being collected by people or whose popularity and variety has made it a collectible. For instance, Pez dispensers were intended to simply be a clever means of dispensing packaged candies but when the company began to make the dispensers in a great variety of forms, people began to collect them. There are many kinds of wholesale collectibles like baseball cards, decorative plates, music boxes, scale models, stamps and figurines. You may even find antique golf collectibles!

Bear in mind that anything you decide to acquire as a set qualifies as a collectible whether anyone else collects it or not. If your local high school football team produces a miniature football every year with the season schedule printed on the side and you have all of them for the past 20 years, you have a collection. It may not be worth anything to anyone but you, but a large part of the point of collecting is the acquisition of objects that bring you personal pleasure.
