Should You Go for Current Engagement Rings? Why Not Try Antique Ones?

Antique diamond engagement rings are a popular choice for engaged couples because they show a quality and history not present in modern jewelry. Prices for antique style
engagement rings vary greatly, especially if you are trying to find a pair of rings, but the purchase is part of an investment that will last a lifetime.

Why are Antique Rings Popular?

There are many different reasons why some people prefer antique style engagement rings. Often these rings feature a more eclectic use of gemstones rather than relying on the diamonds that are standard in modern wedding jewelry. In the nineteenth century, for example, rubies were valued as highly as diamonds and were frequently used in engagement and wedding rings.

Antique engagement ring settings offer more variety and are not just the "solitaires" considered normal today. Many settings are delicately carved, inlaid, or engraved with scroll or filigree work. Differing stones are used in combination in these elaborate settings for maximum effect. For instance antique Victorian rings employ both gold and silver and are often beautifully filigreed. The cut of the included stone or stones may range from pear or tear-shaped to glittering square cuts, a feature many couples find more interesting and romantic than modern rings which can seem overly utilitarian.

What Are Estate Pieces?

One venue for acquiring antique or vintage engagement rings is through estate sales or through estate pieces placed in jewelry stores. This simply means that the owners of the antique estate engagement rings are now deceased and their possessions are being disposed of because there are no heirs or the heirs did not want the item. If you assume that someone died in their 80s and married in their 20s, then the piece in question will be approximately sixty years old. Most jewelers are quite happy to discuss the history of estate pieces they offer for sale and will tell you if the ring is indeed older and perhaps was passed through several generations of a family before coming up for sale.

Some General Guidelines

There are many styles and designs available in antique rings. Although there are thing s you can look for on your own, it's always a good idea to have antique diamond engagement rings independently appraised before buying the piece rather than accepting the appraisal value provided by the current owner or dealer.

Remember that the grading of gemstone quality has changed through the years. Stones in antique pieces may have flaws invisible to the hidden eye. Some flaws can even cause the stone to shatter. Stones should always be examined by your jeweler with a magnifying device.

Ask your jeweler to examine the stability of the setting and any decorative work on the ring. Irregularities add character to an antique ring but you do want to ensure the structural integrity of the piece. Whether you have chosen a diamond or antique sapphire engagement rings the jewelry represents a sizeable investment and you want to proceed carefully.
